Guide to Sub Ohm Vaping

So we’re going into 2025 and perhaps you have been vaping for years or just started and want to learn more about sub-ohm vaping. In this article we will talk about everything sub ohm. A cloud chasing journey that provides the most vape production there is.

First, subohm vapor is much thicker and way more dense (and more satisfying for some) because the heat to produce that is much higher – thus requiring more battery life and a vaporizer set up that can handle this kind of cloud chucking power. Yes, it’s still a thing.

Best places to buy your sub-ohm mods, atomizers, e juice, etc:

If you are familiar with the cigarette style e cigs then you will know the vapor production is not huge, just enough to mimic a true tobacco cigarette. These pen-style e cigarettes use more PG in their flavorings and usually require a higher nicotine selection that is equal to what you are used to smoking. Example: Marlboro Reds are 18mg nic, so you pen style or Ego style ecig should be the same as far as e juice goes.

But with sub ohm vaping you get MORE vapor in your lungs and would need to cut back on the nicotine, from 18mg to 6mg is an example. I have cut my intake to 2mg and even 1.5 by mixing a 3mg and 0mg e liquid to make my own concoction. The nicotine does add a bite of flavor, so going to 0mg takes time.

To “subohm” you need a device that can handle this like; box mods, single mech mods, sub-ohm tanks, using higher VG e liquids, and learning how to build coils for your atomizer, we will discuss each of those in detail below.

Single Mechanical Mods

Tube style mod that houses one single battery. An RDA atomizer is recommended instead of a tank because you can not control the volts or wattage. The fire button is on the bottom (a few have them on the side) and the best ones imho are full copper because the electrical current is more stable and reliable. One of the best ones is the Limitless Mod as this one is top of the line and has interchangeable sleeves to create your own style.

Box Mods

Shaped like a box, hence the name. 2 batteries are the norm here unless you get the mini version (many styles available). Now, these are also mini computers where you can control the wattage (some you can adjust the ohms) and adjust your vape for flavor and vapor to suit your vaping desire. With box mod setups you can chuck clouds with ease.

RDA Atomizers

This is a “rebuild-able dripping atomizer” where you build your own coils and wick your own cotton. The type of coil you use can determine the sub-ohm range. Example: single 22 gauge wire wrapped on a 1/8 screwdriver/drill bit will usually yield a .15 – .20 ohm build. See more on “building coils” below.

• Tip: use only organic cotton balls or Japanese cotton (peel the bottom and the lower layer off, use the middle) to make your wicks.

Hybrid Mods

This is where the battery and mod is one rechargeable unit For use with an RDA or sub-ohm tank. Some are able to customize your watts, volts, and ohms like a box mod respectively and some are just simple and easy to go.

Sub-Ohm Tanks

These are tanks with larger air holes for full lung hits and house more e juice – because sub ohm vaping is similar to a gas guzzler car! You go through juice much faster and will most likely enjoy every moment of it! Best ones are made of high grade metal and glass, no plastic here.

Batteries & Chargers

Very important here! So many fake batteries out there on Ebay and Amazon. Please, take the time to buy the authentic name brand batteries from reputable dealers as you will be pleased with yourself later on. The 18650 size is most popular. Look for batteries with 30-40 amp (pulse) and at least 2400 mAh. The higher the mAh rating the longer they will last (and charge, keep that in mind also). Use only chargers made for these types of batteries. Here is a pack of 6 batteries with charger included.

Coil Builds

For building coils. This is crucial folks! When you build your own coils you need to see what ohms they are reading at to avoid an electrical catastrophe!! You can find ohm meters for vaping at the sites listed on top of this post. Please don’t buy the $10 crap ones, I’ve tried them and they broke after a few times of use! These pre-made clapton coils that are awesome. 100 pieces, that should last a while.

High VG E Liquid

E juice in high vegetable glycerin will produce more vapor and are best used for sub-ohm vaping. It is thicker and more gooey unlike PG (propylene glycol) which can spit all over the place in a RDA atomizer. Ideally the best to stay between 70VG/30PG or higher (80/20, 90/10, max VG) for best cloud chucking vapor and flavor. Mt Baker Vapor sells a big 236ml of e juice for under $35 – so check them out. • For building your coils you will need a screwdriver set in a variety of sizes, some wire cutters, non-conductive tipped tweezers, etc.

Building Coils

The ohms will determine what kind of vape you get – the lower the ohm the more more vapor but less flavor, etc. Ideally, a .20 to .40 is great for a full bodied vapor and plenty of flavor. The lower the gauge also determines the outcome, the lower the gauge to hotter the vape.

1. Wire: Use only wire made for vaping and between 20g – 28g which provides enough range to customize your coils.
2. Cotton: Like mentioned earlier, use only organic cotton balls or Japanese cotton, or cotton made for vaping.
3. Crazy coils: A dual parallel 22g 4 wrap on a 2.5mm screwdriver will get you under .10 ohms – but be careful, this vape is HOT and mostly used for cloud competitions. Only do this if you know what you are doing and your mod/atomizer can handle it. The “clapton coil” is a mix of twisting 2 or 3 wire sizes together. Those are complicated, easier to just buy them already made from the link above.

Hopefully this opened your eyes and gave you ore insight on how and why sub ohm vaping is so popular and how you can get to cloud chasing yourself without making the same mistakes I did by purchasing cheap crap gear as I only ended up buying the authentic mods and atomizers eventually. Save yourself the time and money, get the good stuff from the beginning.

It doesn't have to be a pain in the ass, you can sub ohm and vape huge clouds of vapor with easy to use devices like box mods and go full custom with building your own coils and start blowing giant clouds of vapor.
